SAN CRISTOBAL VERAPAZ The school is located in the municipality of San Cristóbal Verapaz, one of 16 municipalities in the department of Alta Verapaz. San Cristóbal was established in the year 1565. The population consists predominantly of Mayan Pokomchi Indians, though many of them speak Spanish too. Other languages spoken in nearby areas are Kekchi and Uspanteco. The Town’s yearly festival in honor of its patron saint “Santiago de los Caballeros” is held July 25th. The climate is “subtropical cold” characterized by frequent precipitation which supports cloud forest ecosystems known for their wide variety of vegetation. The altitude of San Cristóbal is 1393 meters (4700ft. ) above sea level. Average temperatures range from 16º C to 23º C (60o to 75o F).
